Today's Activities: Suzhou Railway Station, Lingering Garden, The No.1 Silk Factory, Pan Gate, Garden Night Show

Up your arrival at Suzhou, your local guide will meet you at the railway station and escort you to the hotel. After a rest, you will have a tour to the quiet Lingering Garden and the Pan Gate. Later visit the No.1 Silk Factory to learn how the pure silk products are made from a small cocoon. Enjoy the Garden Show in the evening.

Lingering Garden - Lingering Garden is one of the best-preserved gardens in Suzhou. The garden covers an area of about 2.3 hectares (5.7 acres). Aside from its size, the garden is famed for its use of space and wide variety of foliage. Originally built in 1583, the garden rests outside Suzhou's Cang Gate. Built by Xu Taishi (who later used the garden as a private residence), the garden is noted for its grouping of small gardens and elegant buildings. Subdivided into four distinct areas, the garden is known for its classical use of space featuring cottages with bamboo fences in the northern part of the garden, and enchanting wooded hills in the west. The central part is the most impressive feature – a man-made mountain and lake that is notable for the beautiful landscaped scenery. One of the major components that characterize Suzhou's gardens is the inclusion of artificial hills, usually built with rocks from Taihu Lake. A 6.5-meter-high 'Cloud-Capped Peak' in this garden is the highest of its kind found in Suzhou's classical gardens. It is believed to date from the Northern Song Dynasty. About five tons of limestone were used in its construction.

The No.1 Silk Factory - The No.1 Silk Factory was founded in 1926 as a state-owned factory, where tourists can get the knowledge of the whole life of a silk worm and how the people produce silk with the old style machine, and the making process of hand made silk quilt, and sometimes have chance of watching the fashion show.

Pan Gate - Pan Gate or Water City Gate is a famous historical landmark in Suzhou. It is located on the south-west corner of the Main Canal of Suzhou. Built in 514 B.C., historians estimate it to be around 2,500 years old. Visitors can climb the stairway on the northern side of the gate wall for a panoramic view. On the wall are crenellations, battlements, loopholes, sluice gates, a capstan and a cistern (for fire prevention). When a small boat goes out of this water city, it has to pass through the water gate, before entering the Grand Canal. It is known for the "three landmarks of Pan Gate". They are the Ruiguang Pagoda, the earliest pagoda in Suzhou built in 247 B.C., the Wu Gate Bridge, the entrance to the gate at that time over the water passage and the highest bridge in Suzhou at the time, and Pan Gate.

Garden Night Show - Quite different from that in broad daylight, the classical Chinese garden setting in Suzhou creates an atmosphere of peace and calm in the evening. It is relaxing and enhancing to tour an elegant garden at night with the Chinese melodious music. The garden show, a show of local opera, folk song, dancing and traditional instruments, is a special and harmonious combination of classical Chinese garden and music.

Day 2 (B/L/-)

Place & Transport: Depart Suzhou
Today's Activities: Suzhou Museum, Grand Canal
Meals: Breakfast, Chinese Lunch

Today's excursion will bring you to the Suzhou Museum and enjoy the gentle breeze while cruise on the Grand Canal before your guide escorts you to railway station your next destination.

Suzhou Museum - Suzhou museum is a typical regional art museum highlighted with the exhibition of history and culture of Suzhou, which used to be the center of Jiangnan, or east China. Officially opened in 1960 and newly-built in Oct. 2006, Suzhou Museum is situated on Dongbei Street. The designer is Bei Lvming(贝律铭), also widely known I.M. Pei,an internationally famous master architect. The base of museum used to be the Mansion of Li Xiucheng(李秀成, 1823-1864), crowned the King of Loyalty in Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, an anti-Qing government founded by rebels in late period of Qing Dynasty. With a total area of more than 8,000 square meters, the museum is artistically separated into three sectors, respectively the east part, west part and the middle part. The middle area features a hall building with a great and exquisite decoration with a local color drawing in Suzhou.

Grand Canal - The Grant Canal and the great wall are the two miracles created by Chinese ancient people. The great canal is the earliest and longest man-made rivers in the world with a history of 2400 years and a length of 1,700 kilometers. It played a great role in the long Chinese historical and cultural communication. The great canal in Suzhou has a length of 82.35 kilometers, which is about 39 percent of its whole length in Jiangsu province.
