Shaoxing Dayu's Mausoleum
Shaoxing Orchid Pavilion
Lu Town of Shaoxing
Go to Shaoxing. In the morning, after your breakfast, we will start our trip to Shaoxing from your hotel lobby in downtown Hangzhou. The whole transfer lasts 40 minutes or so. Shaoxing is a neighboring city of Hangzhou, exactly borders on Xiaoshan District. It is quite easy to go there. (Something interesting is that Hangzhou airport located in Xiaoshan is much nearer to Shaoxing, rather than Hangzhou). Actually, Shaoxing and Hangzhou share not only the airport, but the culture and history. It will be easy to read Shaoxing’s past if you know more about Hangzhou.
Upon your arrival, the local guide will firstly lead you to Dayu Mausoleum (大禹墓, or Tomb of Yu the Great), which is a national key historic site in China. Dayu was a legendary hero & ruler born out of his father’s body, and brilliantly famed for flood control (which was said to be the prehistoric flood across the world, also known as Outburst Flood), and historically speaking, he was also the founder of China’s first state, Xia dynasty. Dayu was respected for thousands of years as the forefather of Chinese people. The whole mausoleum was quite huge and sacred, and the traditional building complex is strictly followed the exclusive requirements of Emperors. Some stele inscriptions left here were the ancient unrecognized words. Annually, a national commemoration rite held here.
Then, we move to the Orchid Pavilion (兰亭), which is the holy land of Chinese calligraphy art, a world intangible cultural heritage. The Orchid Pavilion also called Lanting is the site that Wang Xizhi, the sage of calligraphy, created his greatest masterpiece – The Preface to the Orchid Pavilion, when he was a little bit drunk with a group of social elites and scholars. Since then, the Orchid Pavilion is widely accepted as the calligraphy art center in East Asia, including Japan, Korea and other countries. Annually, The Orchid Pavilion International Calligraphy Festival opens here. Orchid Pavilion is a little far from the downtown area.
Lunch you take in the local restaurant typically features the local food, and you will taste some unique rice wine here, which is widely known Shaoxing Huangjiu(黄酒, Yellow Wine).
We start the afternoon trip to Lu Town. Lu town(鲁镇) was the hometown of Lu Xun(鲁迅), considered as the greatest writer and thinker of modern China, and politically respected to be a godlike man after 1949, when People’s Republic of China founded. The town is rebuilt with the original flavor described in Luxun´s novels. The architecture style and atmosphere is typically existed in Shaoxing. Being a water city, Shaoxing have many ancient bridges and waterways. It´s a unique experience boating on the rivers because of the unique boat type. With a black awning, the small and narrow boat is called Wupeng Boat(乌篷船). The rowers usually wear traditional Shaoxing wuzhan hats. Sitting in a wupeng boat while watching the street scene is a symbolic Shaoxing experience.
Finally, say goodbye to this water city, and get back to your hotel in Hangzhou
