Jingan District(静安区) is a traditional zone of the dignitaries and celebrities’ living area and an important display window for overseas communications. Adjacent to six districts, Jingan District is located in the center of downtown Shanghai. The busiest part is the west Nanjing Road, where visitors could travel to the top shopping malls in Shanghai like Heng Long Square, CITIC Square and Isetan of Meilong Town, and the international brand hotels are also available easily here like Hilton, PuLi, Portman Ritz-Carlton and so on. It borders in the east Huangpu District along North Chengdu Road, in the west Changning Road along Zhenning Road, Wanhangdu Road, West Wuding Road, Jiangsu Road, Changning Road, in the south Luwan and Xuhui District along Middle Yan’an Road, South Shaanxi Road, Changle Road, in the north Putuo District along Anyuan Road, Changshou Road, and also border Zhabei District along Suzhou River. It covers an area of 7.62 square kilometers, containing 7.57 square kilometer of land area and 0.05 square kilometer of water area.

The hereinafter data is all from 2007. It is partially displaying the basic situation of Jingan District. At the end of 2007, there were 309.8 thousand registered permanent residents in Jing’an District. There were 1,950 births with a crude birth rate of 6.29%, 2,631 deaths with a crude death rate of 8.49%, the natural increase in population of -681 with the rate of -2.2% and the regional density of population of 40.8 thousand per square kilometer.

In terms of the population distribution, the year 2007 saw 14,653 households and 43,140 residents in Jing’an Temple Sub-district, accounting for 13.89% and 13.92% respectively in Jing’an District, 23,559 households and 64,965 residents in Caojiadu Sub-district, accounting for 22.33% and 20.97% respectively, 28,009 households and 84,202 residents in Jiangning Road Sub-district, accounting for 26.54% and 27.17% respectively, 19,329 households and 58,663 residents in Shimen No.2 Road Sub-district, accounting for 18.32% and 18.93% respectively and 19,966 households and 58,891 residents in Nanjing (West) Road Sub-district, accounting for 18.92% and 19.01% respectively.


History & Culture of Jingan District

Just the name implies, Jingan District got its name from the Jingan Temple. Dating back to the Three Kingdoms' Period in the 3rd century, it is one of the ancient Buddhist temples in Shanghai. Originally named Luduchongxuan, it was changed to Yongtai Buddhist Temple in the Tang Dynasty (618-709), then to Jingan Temple during the Song Dynasty when the reign period of Dazhong Xiangfu started in 1008.

In 1862, the 1st year of Emperor Tongzhi's reign period in the Qing Dynasty, when a road was built from the international settlement to the Jingan Temple, it was named Jingan Road (present-day Nanjing Xilu). In the following century, owing to its convernient location, a transportation network was formed centering around the Jingan Temple which became the starting point of the urbanization process in western Shanghai. After repeated changes, the area around the Jingan Temple was finally named Jingan District in January 1960.

Located at the center of Shanghai, Jing An District is one of the city's well-known old business districts. Covering an area of 7.62 square kilometers, it has some 310,000 registered residents. The district is adjacent to Huangpu District by North Chengdu Road in the east; to Changning District in the west by Zhenning Road, Wanhangdu Road, West Wuding Road, Jangsu Road, and Changning Road; to Luwan and Xuhui Districts in the south by the streets of Middle Yanan Road, South Shaanxi Road and Changle Road; to Putuo District in the northwest by the streets Anyuan Road and Changshou Road; and to Zhabei District in the northeast by the Suzhou River. The district has five sub-district offices, namely, Jingan Temple, Caojiadu, Jiangning Road, Shimen Er Road and West Nanjing Road.

As one of the districts in the downtown area, Jingan District has the business zone represented by Westgate Mall, Citic Square and Plaza66, and the hotel zone outlined by the rise of top class hotels such as Jingan Hilton Hotel, Shanghai JC Mandarin and Shanghai International Equatorial Hotel. The updated district functions and status have brought to it a high concentration of talents, materials, capital and information, making the district an ideal location for people in and outside China to invest, start business and settle down.
