As a result of the big leap and lack of sustainability in education modification or reform, lots of national key universities were forced to leave their headquarters and had to move to another remote or underdeveloped cities. For instance, China University of Mining and Technology through 14 migrations and finally settled down in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province from its original headquarters Beijing, and China University of Geosciences and China University of Petroleum shared the same or similar destiny. Three universities are not rejuvenated anymore since their endless migrations, except the University of Science and Technology of China (中国科技大学), which moved to Hefei from Beijing in 1970. |
University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is a top prestigious university in China and also a highly-reputed university in the world. It boasts the cradle of the scientists and engineers of China. USTC different from other universities in China is directly administrated by China Academy of Sciences (CAS). Thanks to USTC, Hefei becomes one of four Sci-Tech Education Cities of China.
Established in 1958, University of Science and Technology of China was firstly headquartered in Beijing under the administration of China Academy of Sciences. The motive of this world famous scientific research university originally was to meet the increasing needs of China in the realms of science and technology and enhance the international competitiveness during that period of Cold War. Different from other universities inclusive of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University and JiaoTong University. USTC is a top research university in charge of the cutting-edge science research and top elite education. In the history of USTC, there is no large massive enrollment of students, and the accepted students are nearly all the top winners of the national examinations of different provinces. And the total number of the students on the campus is just half of that in Tsinghua and Peking Universities. The official website of the university is http://en.ustc.edu.cn/
At present, USTC consists of 15 institutes and 30 departments with the graduate school, Suzhou Research Institute, Shanghai Research Institute and USTC Advanced Technology Research Institute. There are 6 national basic scientific research and education base comprised of mathematics, physics, mechanics, astronomy, bioscience and chemistry, 1 talent cultivation base of national life science and technology, 8 first-level national key disciplines, 4 second-level national key disciplines, 2 national key training disciplines, and 18 first-level key disciplines of Anhui province. The world famous laboratories include National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) in Hefei, Micro-scale Material Science National Laboratory, High Magnetic Field Laboratory Center, State Key Laboratory of Fire Science, State Key Laboratory of Particle Detection and Electronics, National Engineering Laboratory for Speech and Language Information Processing, National High Performance Computing Center and Mengcheng National Geophysical Observatory.
The Gifted Teenager Class of USTC
This is the special part of USTC to educate the gifted teenagers, who we take as the talented children. Most of them are the junior school students or the senior school students at the age from 10 to 17. This is a big education test after the Cultural Revolution. Lee Tsung-dao, a famous physicist and physics Nobel Prize winner, advocated this proposal with the support of Deng Xiaoping, to explore the way of educating more excellent talents and cultivating more top genius of science and technology.
The International Partnership of USTC
USTC actively participates in international cooperation in various ways. It has engaged in joint research and educational activities with internationally acclaimed organizations such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the Max Planck Society, Oxford University, Heidelberg University, Stanford University, MIT, Princeton University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Yale University, etc. For example, it established a training program with ITER and initiated the SUM program, a summer camp for students and an academic forum for professors from Stanford University, USTC and MIT. USTC is also a member of several important international networks, including the Association of Pacific Rim Universities and the Association of East Asian Research Universities, etc. In 2013, USTC hosted the signing ceremony for the Hefei Statement, which USTC has actively promoted. The Hefei Statement is an agreement among the Association of American Universities (AAU), the C9 League (C9), a consortium of China’s top nine research universities, the Group of Eight (Go8), a coalition of Australia’s top universities, and the League of European Research Universities (LERU) to promote cooperation among world-class research universities.
