Chun’an(淳安, literally translated to be the ease of purity) under the administration of Hangzhou, is a county connecting with Jiande, Tonglu, Quzhou, Xiuning, Shexian and Lin’an. Chun’an actually has a long history as early as 208, originally under the administration of Shexian county, Anhui province, and called Shixin County or Xinding County at the time. In 1963, it was officially administrated in Hangzhou. Chun’an is the location of the famous scenic area of Thousand Islands Lake, and is also the largest county in Zhejiang province.

Chun’an County has a distance of 166 kilometers away from the downtown area of Hangzhou, and approximately 2.5 hours driving on the way. As an important tourist destination outside of the downtown area, Chu’an County is another stop on the Hangzhou-Huangshan Passenger Trail. Actually, in downtown area, there is the regular bus service for transportation.

Orignially, Chun’an’s name was Qingxi, which was full of literary romance (literally like a crystal stream), and since Tang Dynasty, it lasted for 316 years until the breakout of Fangla Peasant Uprising(方腊起义). This uprising finally was suppressed by the Song Dynasty’s government, but Emperor Huizong hated Muzhou, which used to be the administration prefecture of Chun’an, and changed it to be Yanzhou in 1121, which means a prefecture of strictness, and changed Qingxi County to be Chunhua County. He thought that this place is full of the unruly people, and the cruel torture and the brutal laws should be implemented to treat them. But he was also afraid that the revenge was too obvious, and had an excuse that Yan was the surname of Yan Ziling, and this was the retreat place of Yan Ziling, and it was named officially Yanzhou in memory of the high morality and reputation of Yan Ziling.

And the reason to change the Qingxi County to be Chunhua is that the Qingxi County had many bad guys, and the purification should be done to educate them. This is a name full of regional discrimination. In the Southern Song Dynasty, there were many people became the officials through the national examination, and they were not satisfied with the name, and then changed the name to Chun’an.
