Originally, Yuyuan garden was built in 1559 by Pan Yunduan, a local governor of Sichuan province in Ming Dynasty, to serve his father who was Pan En, a famous minister during the reign of Emperor Jiajing in Ming Dynasty. Yu in Chinese language is an auspicious character, and means comfort, satisfaction and pleasure, and it also the abbreviation of Henan province. To be the name of the garden was to show the filial love of making parents and the elder happy and pleasant. It also connects with Yuyuan Market, and you can enjoy some typical local snacks of Shanghai over there.

At last, we will visit the famous Jade Buddha Temple. Jade Buddha Temple located on the north of downtown Shanghai, exactly on the intersection of Anyuan Road and Jiangning Road. Originally built in 1918, Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple is a building complex featuring the architectural style of Song Dynasty. On the axes of the temple, there are the main buildings such as the Heavenly King Hall, Grand Hall of the Great Sage and Jade Buddha Building. On both sides of the axes, visitors can see the Lying Buddha Hall, Kwan-yin Hall, Bronze Buddha Hall and Meditation Hall. Jade Buddha Temple is the most monastery in Shanghai. On the first day, and the fifteenth day every month, or on the traditional festivals of Buddhism, the Buddhists gather here to pray for blessing of Buddha. Today, you are in the daytime during the journey of Xian-Lanzhou-Xining, enjoying the majestic northwestern scenery of China. And you enter the region of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region. The high altitude sickness may happen. You need to take care of yourself, and adjust to the coming plateau life.

Xining-Golmud part of the train journey is mostly experienced at night, which is one of the disappointments. But it is the period to take a sound sleep and prepare for next day’s arrival in Lhasa, the center of world’s roof. During the night, you can see an original wild world without any humankind’s sites except the high sky, closer stars and black mountain ranges, if possible. It is the world without man except this train itself. Taking a high-altitude train may give you an absolutely inspired understanding on life and nature.

    Day 5 - Arrival in Lhasa (-/-/-)
Accommodation - Shangbala Hotel (3 Stars)

Today, when you wake up, you have been in Golmud, Qinghai province. The sunny day and strong shining may let you feel excited and happy. Viewing the both sides through the train windows, you may be more fascinated by the nature’s superpower. A vast land without human, just some yaks. The towering mountains make you understand what the world’s roof means.

Then the train still heads to Lhasa and this the last part of your time in train. The highest point you may experience will reach 5,072 meters above the sea level, the snow capped mountains on both sides make your train sightseeing impressive. And then you may want to go outside at once, but sorry, you have to calm yourself down till your arrival in Lhasa.

The time the train arrives in Lhasa around 20:15, but the time is not so accurate, even may be late for one hour. Anyway, our guide and driver will wait till meet you. Then transfer to your hotel in Lhasa. Please feel free to get your way to acclimate yourself to the high altitude.

Generally, the local guide will suggest you not to take showering and bathing at the first night. This is their experience to help you suit the high altitude life as soon as possible.

The overwhelming Potala Palace is your first stop. Potala Palace is the widely known symbol of Tibet in the world. In 1994, it was recognized as the site of World Cultural Heritage. In folk community, it is famous as the second Putuo Buddhist Mountain, and traditionally regarded as the meditation center of Guanyin Bodhisattva. Potala Palace is the palace and meditation center of Dalai Lama, who is taken as the aspect of Guanyin Bodhisattva in Tibetan Buddhism. Potala Palace together with its square is the center of downtown Lhasa. It is built on Red Hill in the northwest side of Lhasa. The opposite is the government office complex of Tibet. The whole Potala Palace scenic area including the square is crossed by an avenue officially named Beijing West Road. Potala Palace is also a huge building complex on the top of the Red Hill. Different from summer palace, Norbulingka, Potala Palace is widely known as the winter palace. Originally, Potala Palace was built for King Songtsen Gampo’s marrying Princess Wencheng of Tang Dynasty. It has been reconstructed for many times in different reigns of Dalai Lama. It is the complex of politics and religion and the best evidence to release the characteristic of traditional Tibet social management. Potala Palace is the treasure center of Tibet in the aspect of spirituality and materiality.

In the afternoon, you’ll visit the Jokhang Monastery. Jokhang Monastery located in downtown of Lhasa and close to Barkhor Street, which is the CBD of Lhasa. Jokhang Monastery is a World Cultural Heritage Site surrounded by many business shops and residential buildings. The Buddhist believers’ loyal and sincere activities to worship the Buddha are quite unforgettable. The Buddhists arrive in the square from different directions at dawn. From then on, they keep their pure-hearted acts to the Buddha for more than 12 hours. The local people say this act could relieve the evil and bring the auspiciousness. They burn the cypress leaf as the incense in the pagoda-style burner all day long, and show body worshipping and face the gate of monastery on the square. This is the most sincere respect to the Buddha I have ever seen. The main Buddha statues in monastery are three aspects of Buddha: the future Buddha, the present Buddha and the past Buddha, and the future Buddha is the main one, the present and the past are both featured of standing statues with intercrossed legs.

    Day 7 - Travel in Lhasa (B/-/- )
Accommodation - Shangbala Hotel (3 Stars)

After breakfast, you'll be driven to visit the Norbulingka Park. Norbulingka also called Lhasa People’s Park is the summer palace of Dalai Lama and the site of World Cultural Heritage. In Tibetan language, it means “Treasure Park”. Located on the west side of downtown Lhasa, Norbulingka currently is the largest and comprehensive public park with most historical sites and best landscape in Lhasa, and also the national key tourist attractions in Tibetan region. Over the past, Dalai Lama used to move to Norbulingka from Potala Palace for leisure and political administration in summer. Originally, Norbulingka was the site of hot spring, and the seventh Dalai Lama built the first palace there to relieve his arthritis. Norbulingka building complex actually featured of the Tibetan classical gardens and comprised of 374 houses or mansions is gradually extended by the seventh Dalai Lama and his successors in different periods.

And then, we come to visit the Drepung Monastery. The Drepung Monastery was founded in 1416 by a disciple of Tsong Khapa under the patronage of a noble family and later enlarged by the Fifth Dalai Lama. The second, third and forth Dalai Lama once stayed here. In the ninth year (1530) of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Ganden Palace was built as the living room of Dalai Lama, who took charge of the power over major religious and political issues in Tibet.

Your tour ends at Sera Monastery. Sera Monastery is located in the northeast suburb about 3 kilometers from Lhasa City. Created in the 17th year (1419) of the Yongle reign, Sera Monastery was one of the famous six Gelugpa monasteries. There are a lot of fine figures of Buddha, frescos, sutras, thangkas and sutra pillars, and a tapestry portrait of Jamchen Chojey. Other valuable cultural relics conferred by the court of the Ming Dynasty include sutras, figures of Buddha and magical instruments. Capable of accommodating eight thousand abbes, the monastery is collectively called with Ganden Temple and Drepung Temple as the Big Three Temples.

After the tour, take an optional Tibetan-style farewell dinner in a typical restaurant, with Tibetan dances and songs.
